Developing Lifetime Action Plans: Preserve–Achieve–Avoid
An Excerpt From the Curriculum of the 4th Grapevine
This is the first of three analytical tools for ferreting out topic areas that may
be rich with material for enhancing Visions, Lifetime Goals (optional) and Action
Plans. As you zero in on those values and Lifetime Goals that fall short of your
aspirations, it’s extremely effective to take the overall situation from a long
distance perspective before you delve into specific actions. Preserve – Achieve
– Avoid is an effective way to do this.
To begin, develop a heading that labels the situation, e.g., “Discontent with Patient
Care.” Then analyze the situation under the following three columns, such as the
following:
|
Preserve |
Achieve |
Avoid |
- the vehicle for being able to see patients
- the need to keep up-to-date on medical knowledge
- an environment with colleagues
- an income that provides my comfortable lifestyle
- being able to live in my present neighborhood
|
- quality time with patients
- a happier patient care team
- more enjoyment as I practice medicine
- being a more enjoyable father/ mother, husband/wife when not at the practice
- that feeling of wanting to go back to work after vacation
|
- the pressure of having to see patients every 10 minutes
- an underlying sense of anger that I must spend energy controlling
- having to practice medicine at more than two clinics
- contracts with ever decreasing reimbursement schedules
